'Bruno' - funny or offensive?

Some in the gay community have called "Bruno" a disgrace and find Sacha Baron Cohen's portrayal of a fashionista offensive. While others laugh. But why are people laughing? Is it "funny, ha, ha," or is it funny because he's mocking the gay community. Some have said it's about as funny as a white man doing black face. Now that's not funny. It's prejudice and it's wrong.

Fashion designers are in the same boat.

Austrian fashion designer Lena Hoschek, who's popular for ther '50s pinup girl style clothes with singer Katy Perry, says she is not put off by the prospect of "Bruno'' - Sacha Baron Cohen's new film where he plays an over-the-top flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion enthusiast. She's looking forward, as are millions of people, to seeing the movie, she told an AP reporter.

Munich-based designer Marcel Ostertag was a little more reserved about his expectations.

He says while he's looking forward to the film - which opens July 10 - he was worried that it may give people the wrong idea of the fashion industry.

The world of fashion isn't really like what he shows,'' Ostertag said. "I can laugh about it because I liked 'Borat,' but I am also worried if people will take him seriously.''

'Sex Positive' returns

Sex Positive, the documentary film about same-sex pioneer Richard Berkowitz, was the opening night film for the Cinema Q Film Festival in May, and it returns to Starz FilmCenter for an exclusive engagement from June 19-25.

I saw this film on opening night of the festival, and it is definitely worth the watch--for those who agree with and don't agree with Berkowitz. His journey has been fascinating, and his message is as timely today as it was at the height of the epidemic.

Berkowitz is a safe-sex advocate, but he's no preacher and he's no prude. His message is to celebrate gay male sex and then educate men about the dangers.

I encourage you to see this film--as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Rebellion, it is also valuable to take a look at the rest of our history. Plus the film, which is directed by Daryl Wein and released by Regent Releasing, is entertaining, and Berkowitz is a complex and fascinating individual.

I interviewed Berkowitz after the screening at the Cinema Q Film Festival, and this video is the product of that interview:

Every Little Step – opens May 22 in Denver

Reviewed by Steve Cruz, Guest Blogger

Grade: A+

I once hated "A Chorus Line." I liked a couple of songs, but didn’t enjoy the full-tilt touring show in the early 1980s at DCPA or the pared down road show a few years ago. Then I watched "Every Little Step," a documentary about reviving the 40-year-old show, and fell in love with the backstory, the songs, the characters, even the new cast – it felt like I got my gay on.

This documentary talks with composer Marvin Hamlisch, summons creator/director/choreographer Michael Bennett through photos, footage and recordings, and brings back the people whose stories became the foundation for "A Chorus Line." The film revolves around casting for the revival of the show, where an all-star casting panel is looking for actor/singer/dancers who embody the roles, but don’t replicate the originals.

The results are charm and magic – laughing, crying, cheering magic.

"Every Little Step" opens in Denver on Friday, May 22 at the Chez Artiste. For showtimes, call 303-352-1992 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com.

Star Treck goes back to the future when James T. Kirk and Spock meet at Starfleet Academy, and they were (are) hot.

Chris Pine (R) plays a young, cocky Kirk and Zachary Quinto (L), Hero's bad ass Sylar, plays Spock.

Star Trek the movie is on IMAX screens this weekend so "go where no man has gone before."

The Gods of Football

The nude rugby player calendar is an annual tradition in Australia, but this is the first time a video crew has been granted access to the production. The Gods of Football DVD from Ariztical Entertainment follows these Hollywood-handsome players to beautiful Australian locations for their male model makeovers and photo shoots with top Australian fashion photographer Pedro Virgil.

Because the calendar and DVD raise funds and awareness for a breast cancer charity, these Aussie sports stars mustered the courage and accepted the challenge to get "naked for a cause" and create some of the hottest and sexiest images ever captured on film! The Gods of Football
2009 Calendar was an international bestseller.

Gods of Football: The Making of the 2009 Calendar grants unprecedented access to these professional athletes and their transformation from macho “footy” players to nude calendar models for a day. Fly-on-the-wall style camerawork captures all the sizzling action on set and many players share touching and surprisingly personal motivations for taking part. Funny outtakes and bloopers give the DVD an element of lighthearted fun.

The DVD, which will be released on May 19, brings to life the stunning, iconic images of the footballers captured for the Gods of Football calendar. Built, hot, sexy, and getting “naked for a cause!” These men are The Gods of Football!
